Consumer Rights Day: NCC Advocates Ethical AI Deployment

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has emphasized the need for fair and responsible utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle the country’s challenges.

The commission highlighted that the introduction of Fifth Generation Technology (5G) in Nigeria has led to increased integration of AI across various sectors, stressing the importance of ethical adoption of this innovation.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of the NCC, made these remarks at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja during his keynote address for this year’s World Consumer Rights’ Day. He underscored the necessity for consumers of products/services to receive fair treatment amidst the widespread use of AI, particularly in healthcare, finance, and transportation services.

Maida emphasized that with the advent of 5G Technology in Nigeria, the application of Artificial Intelligence must adhere to existing laws, uphold citizens’ privacy and rights, ensure transparency, accountability, and avoid biases.

Representing the NCC boss, the Executive Commissioner Designate for Stakeholders Management, Engr Abraham Oshadami, aligned the Commission with the global theme for this year’s event, “Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Consumer.”

Maida remarked, “AI has already made significant inroads into our lives. From voice assistants that respond to our commands to recommendation algorithms that suggest what we should watch, read, or buy, AI is all around us.”
