NADDC Advocates Ban on Importing Used Cars Over 20 Years Old

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has called for a ban on the importation of used cars older than 20 years into the country. NADDC’s Director-General, Joseph Osanipin, made this statement during a public sector engagement event focused on the implementation of the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan.

Osanipin emphasized the need to prevent Nigeria from becoming a dumping ground for used vehicles and to promote the local assembly and manufacturing of vehicles. He also highlighted the importance of setting minimum standards for imported vehicles, including the requirement for essential features such as airbags.

The NADDC aims to increase local content and production levels in the automotive sector through initiatives like the deletion policy, which encourages the production of components domestically. The stakeholders present at the event expressed their support for NADDC’s efforts to revitalize the automotive industry in Nigeria.
