FG moves to check excessive borrowing by states

The Federal Government is taking steps to curb indiscriminate state government borrowing from banks and the capital market. The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has issued guidelines requiring states to meet specific conditions before borrowing. Barrister Charles Abana, Head of Legal, Investigation, and Enforcement at the FRC, expressed concern over banks enticing state governments into loans without proper scrutiny.Abana revealed that the FRC plans to provide a template to ensure compliance and wants the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to issue guidelines to banks.
