Naira Marley, Sam Larry Sue Magistrate, Police, Demand N40m

Controversial singer Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Sam Larry have filed a fundamental rights suit challenging their continued detention over the death of singer Mohbad. They are demanding N20 million in damages and are seeking their immediate release. Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun granted the police application to remand them for only 21 days in the custody of the police. The 21-day remand order granted by the Chief Magistrate has already lapsed on October 26, 2023. 

Pro-Fubara Lawmakers Impeach Speaker, Deputy, ‘Sack’ CJ

Eight members of the Rivers House of Assembly, aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, have carried out the impeachment of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, and his deputy, Dumle Maol. They have elected the previously impeached Leader of the House, Hon. Edison Ehie, as the new Speaker. They also announced the purported suspension of the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Samuel Chibuzor Amadi, and directed the governor to appoint an Acting Chief Judge. Governor Fubara has since congratulated Hon. Ehie on becoming the new Speaker of the House.

Naira Depreciation: CBN Asks Court To Dismiss Falana’s Suit

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to dismiss a suit filed by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, seeking to compel the apex bank to stop the alarming depreciation of the Naira. CBN, in its preliminary objection to the suit, is contending that Falana does not have legal standing to file the suit and that the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain it. The senior lawyer had filed the suit to challenge the falling rate of the Naira and the dollarisation of the economy. Falana is also asking the court to compel the CBN to stop the dollarisation of the economy since Section 20(1) of the Act stipulates that the Naira is the only legal tender in Nigeria.

FEC Approves N2.1trn Supplementary Budget For Urgent National Issues

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a supplementary budget of N2.18 trillion to address pressing national issues, with a significant allocation of N605 billion for national defense and security. This funding aims to sustain and enhance the progress in security efforts. Additionally, N300 billion has been allocated for repairing bridges and road construction, N200 billion for agricultural support, N210 billion for wage awards, and N400 billion for cash transfer payments. The government has also secured an $800 million loan from the World Bank to provide cash transfers to 15 million households. 

Ballon d’Or 2023: Osimhen, Oshoala Make Nigeria Proud

Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Napoli player and Nigerian footballer to rank in the top 10 of the 2023 Ballon d’Or list. Osimhen secured the 8th position on the list due to his remarkable performance, contributing to Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years as the league’s top scorer. Similarly, Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala also received recognition as the 20th-best women’s player globally in the 2023 Ballon d’Or rankings. Oshoala is currently with the Nigeria senior women’s national team preparing for the second leg of the 2024 Olympics qualifier against Ethiopia. She joins her fellow Barcelona teammates Mapi Leon, Patri Guijaro, Fridolina Rolfo, Salma Paralluelo, and the winner Aitana Bonmati, on the Ballon d’Or ranking.
