NSCDC CG Sues for Peace, Orders Amicable Resolution with NUPENG

In response to the blockage of the Olu Obasanjo Way in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), the Commandant General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has called for peace and directed a delegation to engage in talks with the State Executive of NUPENG and other stakeholders. The aim is to find an amicable resolution to the ongoing dispute.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, resulted in the disruption of traffic flow as NUPENG positioned tankers along the major road. NUPENG alleges that the NSCDC Rivers State Command mishandled the case involving three petroleum tankers, which were impounded and handed over to the Corps by the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division Garrison in Port Harcourt on November 4, 2022.

The NSCDC Rivers State Command, however, strongly condemns NUPENG’s actions, attributing them to their refusal to accept the forfeiture of the three tankers. The Commandant of the NSCDC Rivers State stated that a forfeiture order was obtained from the Federal High Court 6, Port Harcourt Judicial Division on December 20, 2022.

To ensure transparency and public awareness, the Commandant reveals that an advertisement was placed in the Punch Newspaper and Newspaper Surveillance, Volume 24, on January 23, 2023. The advertisement notified the general public about the court order and allowed for objections, if any, within a specified timeframe. The Commandant emphasizes that due process was followed in handling the tankers and their flammable contents, countering NUPENG’s claims of illegal impoundment and defacement.

Following the meeting between the NSCDC delegation and NUPENG representatives, both parties have reached an amicable resolution. NUPENG and other stakeholders have pledged their unwavering support in the fight against oil bunkering activities. This development signifies a significant step towards peace and cooperation between the NSCDC and NUPENG.

The NSCDC Director of Public Relations, CC Olusola Odumosu, signed the statement, affirming the Corps’ commitment to maintaining public safety and fostering a harmonious relationship with relevant stakeholders.

With tensions easing and dialogue prevailing, the NSCDC and NUPENG aim to restore normalcy to the affected area and work together to prevent illegal activities in the oil and gas sector.
