9th Senate holds valedictory meeting today

The ninth Senate is currently holding its valedictory session, marking the conclusion of its four-year term.

Originally scheduled for Thursday, the valedictory session was postponed to Saturday due to a meeting between the president and newly elected members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the national assembly.

Attending the final sitting of the ninth Senate are among others, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Oluremi Tinubu, the first lady.

One of the highlights of the valedictory session in the upper legislative chamber is the presentation of “certificates of legislative service” to the senators.

Among the first recipients of these certificates were Shettima, Tinubu’s wife, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, and Ovie Omo-Agege, the deputy senate president.

Recall that the ruling party had nominated Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, and Barau Jibrin, a senator representing Kano north, for the positions of senate president and deputy.

In the House of Representatives, the APC selected Tajudeen Abbas, a lawmaker from Kaduna, as the speaker, and Benjamin Kalu, a lawmaker from Imo, as the deputy speaker.
