Anambra commissioner raids beggars’ spots, arrest 50

On Wednesday, a joint task force from the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare and Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade visited significant locations in the state and eliminated over 50 street beggars and out-of school children hawking from Awka and surroundings.

According to the ministry, the measure was taken to clean up the state, create a free flow of traffic, and rescue out-of school children in order to realize the current administration’s clean, green, and sustainable megacity plan.

Arroma, Regina Ceali Junction, UNIZIK temporary site, Akwata Junction, Amawbia Bypass, and Eke Awka market were among the places visited.

The raided men, women, and children were believed to be from various sections of the country.

Ify Obinabo, the commissioner for women and social welfare, told reporters during the operation that the ministry has noticed a daily rise in the number of child hawkers in the Awka area and nearby areas.
