On Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari authorized the restoration of the deteriorated Ogoni section of East-West Road in Rivers State.
During the groundbreaking ceremony of three projects in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, President Buhari approved the projects, which include the ‘Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration’, ‘Ogoni Specialist Hospital’, and ‘Ogoni Power Project’.
The President conducted a virtual ceremony from Abuja that was broadcasted live at the event. He stated that the ceremony was part of keeping the promises made to the Ogoni people during his campaign visit to the area before the 2015 elections.
He explained that the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, led by the Federal Government, was responsible for cleaning up areas in Ogoni that had been affected by crude oil.
Buhari mentioned that in addition to establishing HYPREP, his government allocated significant funds towards building the expensive Bonny-Bodo road that will link the East-West Road upon completion. He further stated that this development will enhance the economic and social growth of Ogoni.
Buhari who is pleased with the progress being made in various projects that will improve the lives of the Ogoni people said the completion of the Ogoni Power Project will support the Potable Water Schemes, Livelihood Programme, and the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration. Additionally, the Specialist Hospital projects will improve the socio-economic development of the area, create job opportunities for skilled workers, and accelerate entrepreneurial efforts.
