Earthquake: Nigerian students undergoing post-trauma analysis, 3,381 people dead

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has confirmed that death toll in the devastating earthquake in the Syrian-Turkish border region has risen to 3,381 with more than 20,000 people were injured.

AFAD added that over 5,700 buildings reportedly collapsed.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan has declared seven days of national mourning following devastating earthquakes.

The vice president of Hatayspor football club Mustafa Ozak on Tuesday told the media that Ghana international winger Christian Atsu has been found alive after being buried under rubble in the earthquake. He added that sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.

Also, the National Association of Nigerian Students in Turkey has said that Nigerian students who were traumatized as a result of the earthquake that hit the country have been taken in by Turkish officials for post-trauma analysis.

The president of NANS Turkish zone, Yakubu Sabo, on Tuesday, said some Nigerian students were traumatized and were undergoing post-trauma analysis, adding that they would be released once they were certified okay.

Orhan Tatar, head of the earthquake and risk reduction department, said the region’s weather conditions were very bad, including heavy snowfall, downpours and strong winds in the affected regions.

The earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.7 struck southeast Turkey in the border region with Syria early Monday morning.

It was followed at about noon by another quake with a magnitude of 7.5. AFAD said there had been 285 aftershocks.
