HALF SALARY: UI lectures protest in Ibadan

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has on Monday, protested the part payment of the salaries of its members by the Federal Government.

The lecturers’ union is protesting the government over unmet demands and the recent payment of a pro-rata salary to lecturers.

ASUU has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government since October when the union suspended its eight-month strike in line with an order by the National Industrial Court for the lecturers to return to work.

The Federal Government subsequently paid ASUU members part of their monthly salaries on the basis of a “no work, no pay” policy, leading to protests by the union.

The university staff were seen chanting solidarity songs.

Members of ASUU in UI were joined in solidarity by civil society organisations and rights groups  marched within the campus environment to the school’s main gate.

They were seen  with a banner that read “Implementation of Collectively Bargained Memorandum of Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding,’ ‘Deployment of University Transparency Accountability Solution, ‘Immediate Release of Visitation Panel Reports,’ Immediate Payment of Earned Academic Allowance,’ and ‘Reinstatement of All Victimised Academics across Nigerian Universities.’

ASUU branches across the country have been protesting the FG’s half-pay policy imposed on teachers in February, claiming that lecturers should not be turned into casual labourers.

This is because the FG has stated that it won’t pay for work that has not been done.
