Aviation workers Protest Nationwide, Shut operations in Kano

Aviation workers, on Monday, staged a protest in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory over poor welfare, cost of aviation fuel, aviation bill, among others.

The protests are witnessed in Abuja, Kwara, Kano, Lagos, as flights have been delayed and travellers left stranded.

At the Abuja protest, the workers held banners and placards, some of which read, “Buhari, don’t assent to anti-union aviation bills/acts,” Our voice must be heard,” among others.

Meanwhile, flight operations at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport were, Kano, were grounded over a dispute between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

Recall that, despite warning from the federal government, the unions in the aviation sector had directed their members to “embark on peaceful rallies/public demonstrations at all airports in Nigeria to demand the expunging of obnoxious Essential Services clauses from the Bills/Acts of the aviation agencies” on Monday.

The nationwide protest is convened under the banners of the National Union of Air Transport Employees; Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; Association of Nigerian Association Professionals; Amalgamated Unions of Public Corporations; Civil Service Technical & Recreational Services Employees, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers.
