Gunmen attack police command in Kogi, kill inspector

Unknown gunmen have bombed the Police Area Command office at Eika-Ohizenyi in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one inspector on duty.

The gunmen carried out the attack in the early hours of Friday.

The slain officer was identified simply as Mr Jibril, popularly known as Yellow.

The latest attack is the second in less than one month, Recall that the Adavi police station was attacked in early June where three police officers were killed.

In the recent attack, the gunmen numbering seven, allegedly stormed the station on the outskirts of the community at about 12 midnight on Friday and opened fire at those found in sight before setting the station ablaze.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the slain policeman has been taken to Obangede General hospital’s mortuary.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, William Ovye Aya, in a press statement issued on Friday, said following the attack, the Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

“A Police Inspector died in the exchange of fire with the hoodlums, before the Area Commander and a detachment of Military in the area reinforced to the scene of the incident, and the attackers fled,” the statement said.
