Rapes/Ritual Killings: House of Reps calls for urgent action from FG

The House of Representatives has moved a motion of urgent importance on the rising wave of violence, incessant rape and ritual killing of Nigerian women.

The motion was moved by the Minority Leader of the House, Ndudi
Elumelu, during plenary on Wednesday.

While presenting the motion before the House, Mr. Elumelu described the
developments as alarming and worrisome.

He emphasized the need for urgent reaction, saying these incessant attacks
are hindering national productivity as it is occurring amongst people in the
productive age group.

The minority leader also noted the most recent case of 22-year-old
Oluwabamise Ayanwola, whose corpse was found on Carter Bridge in
Lagos State, hours after boarding a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

The motion, titled, “Rampant cases of violence, incessant rape and Ritual
killing of our women folks: A call for urgent intervention”, was adopted by
the House.

The House, therefore resolved to urge the Federal Government of Nigeria,
through the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and National Security and
Intelligence, to fast track the investigations and ensure that the killers of
Oluwabamise Ayanwola are brought to justice.

The House also mandated its committees on Police Affairs and National
security and intelligence to ensure compliance with the resolutions.

The lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honor of the Late
Ayanwola.
