Presidential Aspirant proposes radical bill for Nigeria’s systemic failures

2023 Presidential Aspirant, Dumebi Kachikwu, has proposed what he describes as the most radical bill which he says will address Nigeria’s systemic failure in Education, health, power, water and security.

He calls it, “The Nigerian Patriot Act”.

According to him the proposed bill is a symbol of equity.

His proposal is however by no means a new one. He first made the proposal a year ago.

This latest move comes just a week after the rejection of a Bill seeking to stop children of public officials from schooling abroad by the House of Representatives.

Mr. Kachikwu, in a statement on Thursday, said the bill, sponsored by Sergius Ogun, was not passed because the lawmakers saw it as an affront to their fundamental human rights. He noted that successive governments since independence have failed to improve the lot of the Nigerian people especially in the areas of education, health, water, roads and security.

These are some of the propositions of the bill;

  1. Civil and Public servants can only send their children to Nigerian public schools up to first degree.
  2. Civil and Public servants cannot have power generators or bore holes in their places abode.
  3. Civil and Public servants can only use government owned health care facilities.
  4. Civil and Public servants on official duty within Nigeria can only travel by road
  5. Civil and Public servants are not allowed to have police escorts or protection except when a competent court has ruled that threat to life exists and the police protection is for a maximum period of three months renewable for a period of one month by the order of a court.
  6. Only the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker, Governors, their deputies, Speakers and Deputy Speakers of State Houses of Assembly and the Chief Judges of the different courts shall be entitled to police protection.
