Buhari unveils 1m bags mega rice pyramids in Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled Africa’s biggest rice pyramids on Tuesday in Abuja as part of the event marking the Rice Festival and the launch of the 2021/2022 dry season production.

The 1.2 million bag paddy rice was made of 13 pyramids.

It is said to be the biggest in the continent with each of the pyramids containing about 115,000 bags, of 100kg rice each.

Speaking at the unveiling event, Buhari commended the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, for Initiating the Anchor Borrowers Programme, through which the massive rice production was achieved.

According to the president, before his administration launched the Anchor Borrowers Programme, there were only 15 standard rice mills in Nigeria.

But as of today, there are over 50 Standard and integrated Rice mills creating jobs and reducing unemployment.

The FCT mega rice pyramid is an initiative under the RIFAN/CBN anchor borrowers’ programme which started in November 2015 aims at providing aid to farmers and influencing the value chain of various commodities in Nigeria.

Dignitaries who attended the event include; Godwin Emefiele, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); Aminu Goronyo, President Rice Farmer Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) and some governors.
