Appeal Court upholds withdrawal of Orji Kalu’s degree certificate over fraud allegations

An appeal court in Owerri, Imo state on Tuesday, approved the withdrawal of the Bachelors’ degree certificate of Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, by the Abia State University.

The presiding judge, Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, in her ruling, cancelled the judgement of a high court in Isikwuato, Abia State which had restored the Bachelors’ degree certificate of the former governor.

Justice Adefope-Okojie in her verdict said the Isikwuato high court had no jurisdiction to preside over the certificate issue.

Recall that in 2018, the Abia State University withdrew Senator Kalu’s certificate, over claims of fraud and breach of admission regulations concerning his graduation.

The former governor however, approached a state high court in Isikwuato in Abia State challenging the claims and the subsequent withdrawal of his degree by the university.

However, the appeal court’s decision on Tuesday was because the state high court in Isikwuato lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

Reacting to the judgement of the court, counsel to ABSU, Jesse Nwaenyo said the University was happy with the verdict adding that the judgement further proved that Kalu did not merit the certificate awarded to him by the institution.
