Fire destroys 10 shops in Nyanya Market

A fire outbreak has engulfed a part of Nyanya market located in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in the late hours of Tuesday.

This incident is happening barely three weeks after a fire outbreak occurred at the Kubwa Ultra-Modern Market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

It was gathered that 10 shops containing goods worth millions of naira was destroyed in the fire outbreak.

According to an eyewitness, the fire was said to have started at about 7pm when shop owners had already closed their shops for the day.

The eyewitness added that they were forced to return to the market when the news broke so that they could salvage their goods.

Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of Nyanya Market, speaking with newsmen complained bitterly about the little response they received from the Karu fire service.

He said when Karu fire service was called, they said they had no vehicle available to convey water to the scene so they called Asokoro fire service and before they arrived at the scene, many shops had already been razed down.

Meanwhile, the Head of Operations, FCT Fire Service, Engineer Arinola Adebayo, reacting to the allegation said quick response was put in place and efforts were made by the officials to put out the fire to prevent further destruction.

The Nyanya market chairman added that shop owners whose goods were destroyed in the fire returned to the market on Wednesday morning to count their loss.

The traders called on the government for assistance as millions of naira have been lost without hope of where to start from.
