EFCC detains, grills former Edo governor, Lucky Igbinedion, over alleged N1.6 billion fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, over alleged criminal diversion of public funds to the tune of N1.6 billion.

Sources familiar with the case said the former governor arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, at about 2pm on Thursday, where was grilled by operatives of the anti-graft agency.

Recall that shortly after his tenure as Governor elapsed in 2007, Igbinedion was prosecuted by the EFCC and convicted of corruption.

It was gathered that the new investigation is, however, based on fresh evidence that the former governor diverted a loan obtained by the Edo State government to settle the financial indebtedness of a company in which he was said to have an interest.

Igbinedion’s invitation was confirmed by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren.
