Sanwo-Olu signs bill prohibiting media parade of suspects into law

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed the Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill of Lagos State, 2021, into law.

The legislation prohibits media parade of suspects and provides for compensation to victims of crime, amongst others.

The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday.

The law was first passed in Lagos State in 2007 and amended in 2011 to ensure that the fundamental rights of suspects and persons that come into contact with the justice system as enshrined in the constitution were protected.

The main provisions have been introduced as amendments to the law to furthermore strengthen the justice system, promote the rights of victims and suspects as well as addressing the issue of delay in the administration of criminal justice in the state.
