Who is Tunji Disu, the new Head of IRT?

Following the indictment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and subsequent suspension by the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, on Monday night, announced the appointment of DCP Tunji Disu as the new head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

Disu is also regarded as a celebrity cop who is well-known on microblogging platforms, most especially on Twitter.

While serving as the commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State, Disu came into the limelight for his prowess in addressing several security challenges and ensuring the clinical reform of the unit under his watch.

It was gathered that apart from using the Twitter platform to respond to urgent security matters, he is admired due to his sense of humor shown while interacting with his numerous followers.

The newly appointed police chief was born in Lagos Island on April 17, 1960, and had his post-primary education at Mayflower Junior School, Ikenne, Ogun State. He also attended Pobuna Secondary Grammar School and Saint Gregory’s College, Lagos.

He got a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, and a Post-graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies in Lagos State University.

He also obtained a certificate in Personal Protection in the United Kingdom, Masters in Public Administrations at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Ondo State.

He joined the Nigeria Police in 1992 as Cadet ASP, trained at the Nigeria Police Academy in Kaduna.

Disu worked as a commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos State between 2015 to 2020

He was promoted from the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in April 2019.

Disu trained officers under him on Emotional Intelligence, Anger Control and Management, and De-escalation of crisis.

He also served at State CID, Rivers State, as Deputy Head of the Unit. He was the former Commander of the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union (AU) peacekeeping Mission to Darfur, Sudan.

Before his recent appointment, Disu was Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He has attended several professional courses both home and abroad on Small Arms Smuggling Training for Botswana, Internet Fraud Training for Cambridge University, UK, Strategic Leadership Command Course for Police Staff College, Jos, Forensic Investigations and Criminal Intelligence Course for the University of Lagos.
