The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sealed off a property belonging to the former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
A reliable source at the Zonal office of the EFCC in Kano told reporters that the sealing off of the former governor’s property in the state followed an ongoing investigation that linked the property to proceeds of corruption during his tenure in office from 2011 to 2015.
The seized building is the hospital complex the former governor donated to the state government to serve as an isolation centre during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 but later became a controversial issue as the state government said it was not aware of such a gesture from the former governor.
The source said the sealing was a follow up on a petition sent to the commission by some members of the family of Ismaila Gwarzo, a former National Security Adviser.
The source said, “The issue regarding the sealing is a personal issue among members of Ismaila Gwarzo’s family and Kwankwaso was only involved because he was a buyer of one of the property.”
The EFCC is yet to respond to its latest action on the property but it was gathered that the anti-graft agency was investigating the former governor over claims of diversion of local government funds amounting to N3.08billion.
Kwankwaso had contested the APC presidential primary in 2015 but lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.
He later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wilson Uwujaren, Spokesman of the EFCC, confirmed that the commission was indeed investigating allegations made against the former Kano governor.
