Cholera now in 23 states, 1,178 person killed – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that Cholera disease has been reported in 23 states including the Federal Capital Territory since the beginning of the year, and that over 1,178 persons have died from the infection.

In a situation report on Monday night, NCDC said a total of 37,819 suspected cases have been recorded so far.

The centre said, “As at 8th August 2021, a total of 37,819 suspected cases including 1,178 deaths (CFR 3.1%) have been reported from 23 states and FCT since the beginning of 2021.”

States affected by the cholera outbreak include Benue, Delta, Zamfara,  Gombe, Bayelsa, Kogi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Kebbi, Cross River, Niger, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Yobe, Kwara, Enugu, Adamawa, Katsina, Borno, Taraba and FCT.

The centre has however noted a decrease in the number of new cases in the last two weeks.

It said Bauchi, Niger, Zamfara and Katsina account for 78.1% of 1,956 cases reported in the last two weeks.
