FG suspends Twitter operations in Nigeria

The Federal Government has suspended the operations of microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria indefinitely.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Friday.

However, the statement was posted on the official Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Information.

According to the statement, the decision was necessitated by “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

This development is coming barely 48 hours after the social network service deleted a tweet by Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, which seemed as a threat to the South East region of the country.

Buhari’s tweet read; “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
