Some persons suspected to pirates have attacked a marine speed boat carrying nine passengers from Swali waterfront in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to Koluama 1 in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
A five-year-old child identified as Comfort Isegu was killed in the attack.
The little girl, who was carried by her mother, Lovina Isegu, for the journey, was killed by a bullet when the pirates shot at the boat.
Confirming the incident, the State Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union, Comrade Ogoniba Ipigansi, said in a statement that the driver of the boat, Okilo Orubiko, also got shot in the process but he managed to take the boat and the passengers to Koluama 1 successfully.
Ipigansi revealed that the driver is receiving treatment at Yenagoa and called on the Bayelsa State federal governments to take the security issue serious as the live and property of drivers and passengers using the waterways are not safe.
