Petrol tanker crashes in FCT, spills content

A tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed along the Mararaba-Abuja expressway on Tuesday morning.

It was gathered that the product spilled from the fallen tanker, flowing uncontrollably into nearby shops and residential areas.

The incident reportedly caused residents to scamper for safety.

An eyewitness, who spoke with Daily Trust, said some hoodlums took advantage of the situation to loot items from deserted shops.

The eyewitness, identified as Hassan Abdulkareem, narrated that the tanker lost control while trying to avoid a pothole on the highway at the popular Mopol Junction in Nyanya, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory.

“The accident occurred last night [Monday] and because the tank is loaded with PMS, the product leaks from the tank to shops and residential areas.

“This has left many of the shop owners and residents around that axis, evacuating their belongings for fear of unforeseen fire outbreak as a result of the oil spoilage,” he explained.

Abdulkareem also said security forces mobilized and barricaded the highway, while men of the fire service from Karu and Abuja arrived at the area to prevent any escalation.
