Bandits kill Catholic priest, kidnap priest in Katsina

The lifeless body of a Catholic priest identified as Alphonsus Bello was found on Friday morning on a farmland behind the Catechetical Training School in Malumfashi, Katsina State.

The news of Bello’s death came after a statement by the Dean of Malumfashi Deanery, Stephen Ojapah, at about 1:35am on Friday that the parish house of St. Vincent Ferrer Church was attacked by bandits numbering about 15.

The bandits whisked away Reverend Father Bello and another priest, Joe Keke, during the attack.

The Director of Communications for Sokoto diocese, Chris Omotosho, who also confirmed the incident, said the bandits attacked the Deanery at about 11:30pm on Thursday.

The spokesperson for the Katsina Police Command, Gambo Isah, said operatives of the Command responded to a distress call from the church after the incident; they went on to trail the bandits only to stumble on Bello’s lifeless body. The whereabouts of the other priest is still unknown.

Isah revealed that two suspects have been arrested in connection to the incident.
