Armed herdsmen attacked Abagena community housing the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Makurdi Local government Area of Benue State, killing over seven persons.
On Tuesday morning, hundreds of the angered IDPs blocked the Makurdi-Lafia highway to protest the killing of their colleagues by herdsmen, who attacked the camp on Monday night.
They blocked the highway with corpses of the killed inmates, causing traffic on the busy expressway.
The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, who showed up at the highway, appealed with the protesters to open the expressway to allow traffic flow.
Ortom, in a statement, described the attack on the IDPs camp as inhuman, barbaric and unacceptable. He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to live up to his responsibility of protecting Nigerians.
He lamented that over seventy persons had been killed in Makurdi Local Government alone, while various communities across Benue were suffering from the same killer herdsmen in the past two weeks.
“If the Federal Government had taken the issue of militia herders seriously, it wouldn’t have escalated to this level,” Ortom said.
