Leah Sharibu: “Children or no children, we just want Leah back” – Family to FG

It has been 3 years since Leah Sharibu, a student of government girl’s science and technical college, Dapchi, was kidnapped from school by the Boko Haram terrorist group state alongside 110 others.

While others were released in March 2018, Leah was held back over her refusal to denounce her Christian faith.

The news of the incident shook the country at the time with millions campaigning for her release with the hashtag #freeleahsharibu on social media.

Consequently, President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to secure Leah’s freedom in the months after she was abducted.

In 2019, there were assurances from the Federal Government of ongoing negotiations, but over time, conversations about her release went quiet and not much was heard since then.

On March  23rd, 2021 a report surfaced online alleging that Leah is now with a second child while in Boko Haram captivity which triggered an outpour of emotions with many, beckoning on the government to intensify efforts in ensuring her release.

ROOTS TV reached out to the Sharibu family and they share what joy and relief it is to hear such news as it indicates that Leah is still alive. A feat they take comfort in while praying, hoping, and trusting that the authorities will secure her release soon.

Dr. Gloria Puldu who doubles as the president of the leadership empowerment advocacy and humanitarian (LEAH) foundation set up in honor of Leah, and spokesperson for the Sharibu family said despite the unverified reports of a second child, all the family wants is a for Leah to be reunited with her family as she has committed no crime.

She said;

Whether Leah is with children or no children, the parents want Leah back home. Leah should be released. The government has promised to release Leah like they released all the other Muslim girls, they should release Leah …she has committed no crime.”

The Sharibu family, however, lamented that they are not informed on efforts if any by the authorities at the local, state, or federal levels in securing Leah’s release.
