Gunmen kill police officers and other security operatives in Rivers

Unknown gunmen on Sunday attacked and killed some police officers and other security operatives in Rivers State.

This incident was confirmed by the police spokesperson in the state, Nnamdi Omoni. He said the sad event occurred along the Omagwa/Isiokpo/Elele Owerri Road in the state.

Omoni noted that the details of the attack was still “sketchy” as of the time of filing this report, adding that the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, has launched an investigation into the attack.

A resident who pled anonymity said at least eight people, including two police officers, were killed in the attack.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has condemned the attack. He described it as “barbaric.”

In a statement issued by Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, he said there was no justification for the attack against “innocent security personnel on the legitimate duty of protecting life and property in the State.”

“The Government of Rivers State is saddened by the unwarranted callous attack on security personnel. We offer our sympathies to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the attack,” the statement said.

Wike, however, urged the security agencies in the state to be vigilant adding that the government and people of Rivers State were in solidarity with security agencies “at this difficult times of this unwarranted and mindless violence.”
