Unknown gunmen have burnt down the Okigwe South Police Area Command in Orieagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
Speaking with newsmen, a police officer at the headquarters said the gunmen on arrival, opened fire on the police officers who tried to prevent them, killing about five.
“Our area command headquarters in Okigwe south is on fire. Six policemen shot dead. They also freed the suspects before igniting a fire on the facility,” the police officer said.
The gunmen also reportedly freed suspects in the custody and carted away with arms.
Reacting to the incident, the state police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, said five policemen were killed during the attack while one was missing.
Ikeokwu added that an investigation into the incident had begun.
