COVID-19: No evidence vaccine causes blood clots – AstraZeneca

The British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, AstraZeneca, has refuted claims saying the vaccine against coronavirus causes blood clots.

The company on Sunday said after a review covering more than 17 million people who received the vaccine in Britain and the European Union, there was no evidence of blood clots found.

“A careful review of all available safety data … has shown no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis or thrombocytopenia, in any defined age group, gender, batch or in any particular country,” the company said.

Some of the countries that suspended the vaccine as a result of the clotting issues are Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Austria also stopped using a batch of the shot last week while investigating death from coagulation disorders.

However, Ireland’s deputy chief medical officer, Ronan Glynn said there are no conclusive links between the vaccine and blood clots claims but it is advisable to suspend the use of the shot as a precautionary measure.

Glynn’s recommendation follows the report of four cases of blood clots in adults who were given the AstraZeneca shot in Norway.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca, the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization have categorically stated that there is no indication that the clotting events were caused by the vaccine.
