NDLEA clarifies 24-year-old visa clearance policy

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has issued a disclaimer regarding the misinformation and misconception regarding its 24-yr-old visa clearance policy.

In a statement released by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency listed 8 countries that require mandatory NDLEA visa clearance to Nigerians willing to travel to those countries.

The countries listed are Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Russia.

“The anti-drug law enforcement agency wishes to state as follows: that the policy was not newly created to impose levies on Nigerians traveling abroad but has been in existence for over 24 years.

The policy does not apply to all Nigerians seeking to travel overseas but only those traveling to eight countries usually referred to as ‘source countries’.The countries include Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Pakistan, Philipines, and Russia.”

The agency says the policy was not newly introduced but has been in existence for the past  24 years.

The statement further reads that the order for visa clearance, designed as part of global efforts to end drug menace, is from those listed countries and not the NDLEA or Nigeria.

He added that the policy mischievously circulated on social media is just part of a three-page document, which provides further details on the policy.

“Nigerians can rest assured that NDLEA remains committed to its core goal of ridding Nigeria of illicit drugs and will not deviate from its constitutionally assigned duties.”
