Insecurity: Niger State shuts down public secondary schools

The Niger State government has ordered the closure of all public secondary schools in the state for two weeks as a result of the incessant cases of insecurity.

This was decided after a meeting between the state government and officials from various security agencies.

According to the state’s Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu, who made the announcement, the schools will be closed from Friday, March 12th to Friday, March 26th, 2021.

Salihu noted that although 22 secondary schools, made up of 11 Day and 11 Boarding Schools, had earlier been closed, the new directive is to give security agencies the time to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment.

She however added that this exercise will provide an all-inclusive mechanism and strategy that will restore adequate security and safety of students, teachers, school infrastructure and education managers in the state.

The commissioner commended parents and teachers for their patience and support, adding that the government is committed to ensuring that all schools are safe for effective teaching and learning.
