Hijab controversy: Unknown hoodlums attempt to set Christian school ablaze in Ilorin

Following the recent Hijab controversy between Muslim and Christian communities in Ilorin, Kwara State, some hoodlums attempted to set fire on Surulere Baptist School on Monday if not for the intervention of security operatives.

The school has a church located within the premises.

According to reports, the unidentified hoodlums set tyres on fire and hurled them into the school premises at about 5pm.

However, security operatives at the scene acted promptly to put out the fire that would have caused major damage to the school structures.

No arrest has been made yet but security around the 10 Christian mission schools in Ilorin that were shut down by the state government has been beefed up.

Recall that the Kwara state government had ordered the closure of 10 secondary schools in Ilorin over the mass protest that led to the turning back of female students who wore hijab to the schools.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the State police command, Okasanmi Ajayi, said the state Police Commissioner, Mohammed Lawal Bagega, has directed the DPO in-charge of the area, “To clear all unused tyres within the area, and beef up security.”
