Customs seize N213m worth of Indian hemp hidden in coconut and book covers in Ogun

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area Command, have seized 3,165 wraps of Indian hemp concealed in coconut and book covers.

The products were hidden in 290 sacks with duty paid value of N213 million.

Also confiscated were 41 packets of Tramadol Capsules with paid value of N20.5 million.

The Customs officials handed over the items to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) special command at Idiroko on Thursday.

Peter Kolo, Customs area controller in Ogun State, said the seizures would help in purging the communities of illicit drugs.

He said, “these illicit drugs are part of our effort in collaborating with the NDLEA in riding the country particularly Ogun state of illicit drugs and harmful substances.”

The command had in February made a total of 143 seizures of prohibited items valued at nearly N77.5 million. Some of the items include 5,931 bags of rice, 3,315 cartons of vegetable oil among others.

Kolo said, “A total N3.1 million was realized as fees from the sale of seized petroleum product and auctioning of some scrap metals.

“There are no duties collected on imports of goods as the land borders in Ogun state still remain closed.

“Despite a series of attacks by daredevil smugglers and hoodlums during our course of duty, the Command will not be distracted from executing her mandates.”

Reacting to this development, NDLEA Commander of Narcotics, Idiroko Achia-Abia Ibinabo commended the operatives, adding that NDLEA will always ensure that prohibited items will be permanently destroyed.
