Over 4,000 Fulani herdsmen return to Kaduna

Following the quit notice order given to criminal herdsmen by some state governments in the south, about 4,000 herders have relocated to Kaduna State.

Residents told newsmen that Labduga community in Kachia Local Government Area, a popular grazing community, noticed the growing number of herdsmen and their cattle’s since last week.

Corroborating the news, an official of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hussaini Abdullahi, said about 4,000 herdsmen have been verified and more are still on their way to Kaduna.

Hussaini said, “SEMA and an NGO, Early Recovery Initiative are conducting headcount of the fleeing herdsmen for possible assistance. We do not operate a conventional camp for them, they have been melting into the host community, sourcing immediate assistance from relatives and good Samaritans.”

He added that the fleeing herdsmen who lost their means of livelihood needed food and non-food items.

“But we have also observed that they are also suffering from psychosocial trauma and they, therefore, need psychosocial counselling. We will soon visit them and conduct a needs assessment of their situation to see where we can possibly assist them,” he said.
