Gunshots, Panic as NURTW rival groups clash in Obalende

Rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Thursday morning shot sporadically as they clashed in the Obalende Area of Lagos State.

The clash, which started around 8am, led to panic in the area as motorists, passengers and passersby scampered for safety.

Some residents took to twitter to raise alarm over the incident. One @DE_COMMUNICATOR shared a video from the chaos captioned, “Avoid Obalende right now. Thugs are heavily armed with guns shooting here and there”.

Another user, @AbassOyeyemi said, “Insecurity in Lagos has skyrocketed. Especially on the Island. Crazy shooting by NURTW guys going on at Obalende. This is just after about four days of shootings at Adeniji Adele. Thank God for life.”

Hours after the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said six suspected hoodlums responsible for the unrest were arrested.

The state police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, assured that normalcy has been restored in the area.
