Again, bandits attack Niger, kill 10, kidnap 24

Barely 48 hours after attacking a community in Niger state, bandits again, launched a daring broad daylight raid on some communities in the State, killing 10 persons and abducting 24 others.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack began around 12:30pm on Tuesday and lasted till around 2pm.

Five of the 10 victims killed were said to be members of the local vigilante group, while the others were young boys supporting the vigilantes.

Reports say the bandits, numbering about 50, invaded the communities on motorcycles and operated with sophisticated weapons, including AK-47 rifles.

It was gathered that villagers were dispossessed of food items and other valuables, and that during the attack, a helicopter hovered in the air to allegedly give protection to the bandits.

Another set of bandits, according to sources, blocked the major highway leading to Minna from Sarkin Pawa, leaving motorists to run away for safety.

The Secretary to the Local Government Council, James Jagaba, confirmed the attack but said, “I cannot give you details. My vigilante corps members are still battling with the bandits I have yet to get a report from them.”
