Special Public Works Programme to Engage 774,000 Nigerians Kicks Off On Tuesday – Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo on Sunday night said the Special Public Works Programme which would engage 774,000 unemployed Nigerians will kick off nationwide on Tuesday January 5, 2020.

He stated this in a tweet explaining that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the commencement of the initiative.

According to Keyamo’s tweet, “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the take off of the Special Public Works Programme (engaging 774,000 unemployed itinerant Nigerians) to begin nationwide on Tuesday, January 5th, 2021. All NDE state structures are already in top gear for the take-off ceremonies.”

Recall that the programme which was designed to employ 1,000 Nigerians from each of the 774 local government areas was initially scheduled to launch on October 1, 2020 but due to some hitches following a power tussle between Keyamo and the former Director-General, National Directorate of Employment, Nasir Ladan, the programme was rescheduled for January 2021.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, leaves a meeting with members of the Senate and House Joint Committee on Labour at the National Assembly in Abuja on June 30, 2020.

The Minister added that the workers will earn N20,000 monthly for a period of 3 months on the job amounting to about N46.44 billion.

Ministers from various states are expected to launch the scheme in their respective states in collaboration with the governors.
