Sowore; Court Turns Down Prosecution Counsel’s Application for Adjournment

A magistrate court sitting in Wuse 2 Abuja has rejected the request by the Nigerian police to be given more time to review the formal bail application filed by the human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and others.

On Tuesday Mabel Segun Bello the sitting magistrate stepped down the case for two hours for Adamu Musa, the police prosecutor who was holding brief for James Idachaba to look through the bail application.

Earlier today in the court, the prosecution counsel said he was not prepared for the bail application filed by the defence counsel Marshal Abubakar, saying that they were not served within the specific time ordered by the court. He mentioned that they were served at 10:53am in the court and there were matters of facts raised that he needed to respond to in the application.

However every attempt made by the prosecution to seek adjournment was rejected by the court as the magistrate mentioned that she had taken judicial notice of the complaints, thereafter giving the prosecution counsel two hours to look through the application.

Sowore and others are facing trial on charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly and inciting public disturbance.

The activist was brought to court from the Kuje Correctional Centre in handcuffs, a move which angered his counsel Marshal Abubakar. He requested that the cuffs be taken off the defendants stating that they aren’t criminals.
