Insecurity: Court finally releases soldier who criticized Buhari, Butatai

A military court-martial in Sokoto State has granted bail to a lance corporal, Idakpini Martins, seven months after he was detained for criticizing president Buhari and the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.

The soldier’s lawyer, Tope Akinyode, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday.

Martins, last year, released a video condemning Buhari’s government and administration’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency.

He claimed soldiers were sent out to fight terrorists without proper arms and threatened to reveal the irregularities in the military.

The soldier was not allowed to have legal representation for over a month until Akinyode, a rights lawyer, approached a Federal High Court in Abuja, to file a rights violation lawsuit.

The army did not allow Martins to see his family despite the court order and the matter was later transferred to Sokoto State, where he was to face the court-martial at the city he committed the alleged offence.

However, speaking to news sources on Thursday evening,  the soldier’s lawyer confirmed he has been granted bail.
