Former UNILAG VC Ibidapo-Obe Dies Of COVID-19 Complications

Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe has reportedly died of COVID-19 complications.

The death of Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe came as a shock to the academic community as friends and associates described it as regrettable.

Prof. Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC) and a Distinguished Professor of the Lagos State University LASU said the deceased was in good health when they attended the 2020 convocation ceremony of Crawford University, Igbesa last month.

Peter said, “I am not able to come to terms with this news; because the two of us were together two weeks at the Crawford University convocation and he was bubbling with health.”

Before his death, the late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe was the President of the Nigeria Academy of Science, he was once the Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, he was a two-time recipient of the Best Vice-Chancellors Prize (2004, 2005) and he was conferred with the national honour as Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2004.

The late Ibidapo-Obe died at the age of 71, leaving behind a wife and 4 children.
