COVID-19: WHO investigative team arrive Wuhan

A team of the World Health Organization has finally arrived at Wuhan, China, to investigate the origin of the coronavirus.

The team of experts landed in Wuhan on Thursday and would be isolating for two weeks before commencing their work. The visit comes as China reports its first death from the virus in eight months.

The coronavirus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019 and has since spread across different countries, with over two million people lost to the virus and tens of millions infected. The pandemic has also taken a drastic toll on the global economy in the past one year.

The team is expected to conduct a research and to speak to doctors and people from the market where the genesis of the pathogen is said to have began.

The 10-member team was approved by President Xi Jinping’s administration after months of diplomatic disagreement that instigated a public complaint by the World Health Organization Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Gheybreyesus.

The team lead, Peter Ben Embarek, said the group would start with a mandatory hotel quarantine.

“And then after the two weeks, we would be able to move around and meet our Chinese counterparts in person and go to the different sites that we will want to visit,” he said.

The WHO team’s routine would also include speaking to doctors and market workers and investigating pneumonia cases that arose before the first known case of COVID-19.
