Court Martial Sentences Soldier to Death Over Murder of Lieutenant

A court-martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital yesterday Sentenced one Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi of 212 Battalion to death by firing squad for shooting dead the adjutant of his unit, Lieutenant Babakaka Ngorgi.

The incident happened in July 2020 in Bama Local Government of Borno State.

It was reported that Lieutenant Ngorgi refused to grant Maduabuchi a welfare pass, which caused an altercation and eventually led to his death.

Four other soldiers, identified as Sergeant Sani Ishaya, Lance Corporal Bidemi Fabiyi, Private Adamu Abdulrasheed and Private Musa Bala, were charged for manslaughter and sentenced to various years of imprisonment.

The President of the Court delivering the judgment at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, Brig.-Gen. Arikpo Ekubi, said, “For the offence of murder, is death; as provided under section 106 of the Armed Forces Act. This sentence is to be carried by firing squad. May God have mercy on your soul.”

He said the sentences were subject to confirmation by the appropriate Nigerian Military authority as provided under section 151 subsection 1(b) and section 152 Armed Forces Act, 2004.

General Ekubi stated that the soldiers conducted themselves in an unprofessional manner, which was totally unacceptable to the Army, which has particularly in the last three years focused on the protection of the fundamental human rights of every citizen.
