Senate postpones passage of 2021 budget till Monday Dec. 21

The Senate has postponed the passage of the 2021 budget till Monday, December 21, 2020.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who disclosed this at plenary on Wednesday, said the development followed new items of expenditure transmitted to the National Assembly by the Executive.

Lawan said the Committee on Finance will work through the weekend to include the new requests from the executive in their 2021 Appropriation Bill report.

He stated that the Senate would hold a special session on Monday December 21, 2020, to consider and pass the 2021 budget.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in October, presented the 2021 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly with aggregate expenditure of N13.08 trillion.

For 2021, the President said the proposed N13.08 trillion expenditure comprises Capital Expenditure of N3.85 trillion, Non-debt Recurrent Costs of N5.65 trillion; Personnel Costs of N3.76 trillion; Pensions, Gratuities and Retirees’ Benefits of N501.19 billion; Overheads of N625.5 billion; Debt Service of N3.124 trillion; Statutory Transfers of N484.49 billion; and Sinking Fund of N220 billion to retire certain maturing bonds.
