Nigeria and Jamaica launch direct flights

Nigeria and Jamaica have launched inaugural direct flights linking to both countries.

This development was disclosed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Ferdinand Nwonye, in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

Nwonye explained, the move was part of the activities to commemorate the 50 years of good bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Jamaica.

‘An inaugural direct flight, Air Peace, departed from Lagos and has landed in Montego Bay, on Monday, 21 December 2020,’ he said.

It is reported the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in company with a number of other senior Nigerian government officials and members of the organised private sector were on board.

“They were received at the Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay, by the Minister of Transportation of Jamaica and other top Jamaican government officials.”

“It is expected that the welcome development will deepen relations between the two countries in areas of tourism, education and economic activities, to mention a few.” He added.

Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Esmond Reid, in a statement said “the direct flights are a historic and unique opportunity, as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, to reconnect with family and friends from Nigeria, Jamaica, the Caribbean and other parts of the world, in a world class tourist destination.”

Saying the move was a reflection of the creative fusion of the Nigerian and Jamaican history and culture, which both partners have dubbed the Nai-Jamaica Project. The Commission added that the first flight from Lagos on December 21 will return on December 28, 2020. A second rotation will take place from December 30 to January 6, 2021.
