Nineteen suspected armed robbers reportedly escaped from the custody of the Cross River Police Command headquarters at Diamond Hill in Calabar, Cross River state.
A police source while narrating the incident, said the escape took place on Sunday night when the robbers used a hacksaw to cut the iron key to the cell were they were detained and escaped.
He stated, “As I speak to you, the station guard and some other officers are being detained. This could not have happened with the SARS. Our lives are in danger.”
The source further said none of the escapees have been re-arrested as at Monday morning.
The news was however debunked by the Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, who said, “The information is not true. Only three robbers attempted to escape but were arrested and returned to the cell”
