By Uzoanya Ugonma

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mahmood Yakubu has stated that women are not well represented in political positions in Nigeria.

This was revealed in the INEC report titled “Review of the 2019 General Election: Report of the Commission’s Retreats and Stakeholder Engagements” which was presented by the INEC Chairman. The report covered the electoral umpire’s general preparedness for future election processes.

According to the report, only 7.5% of 1,066 candidates were women during the governorship election while in the vice presidential contest, out of 73 candidates, 22 were females.

In the presidential election, among 73 candidates, only 6 were females.

Also, from the report presented, the highest so far was in the states house of assembly where out of 14,580 candidates, 1,872 were women but in percentage, it was 12.8% which is still low.

Furthermore, of the 44 ministers in the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, only 7 which is 3.08% are women.

It should be noted that in spite of the promises by the government to give women more slots in elective and appointment positions, from the data presented by INEC, it is obvious that this promises has not been fulfilled.
