ASUU mourns frontline nationalist Balarabe Musa, says he will be missed for his socialist ideals

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commiserated with the family of former Kaduna state governor, Balarabe Musa, who passed on recently. The union said that the late politician and crusader for good governance would be greatly missed by the Nigerian public.

ASUU’s condolence message was communicated in a statement by its President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi.  The ASUU president stated that the union has lost a great ally and a revolutionary leader who will be missed for his socialist ideals.

Ogunyemi described Balarabe as a committed revolutionary leader who worked for the socialist transformation of Nigeria. The university dons posited that if Balarabe’s ideals had been implemented by successive administrations, Nigeria could have been a model for Africa.

According to the ASUU president, “His departure is a challenge to the people’s radical socialist movement in Nigeria to close ranks and unite the oppressed to form their own party; with the goal of fulfilling Balarabe’s vision of Nigeria as a free and united people living in a socialist country”.

He also noted that Balarabe was a major source of inspiration to the consolidation of ASUU principles saying his advocacy for state-funded education at all levels, state-financed health provision, transportation, housing and employment endeared him to the grassroots.

Balarabe Musa was the governor of Kaduna state between 1979 and 1981. He was a vocal critic of several military and civilian rulers in Nigeria. His pro-people’s brand of politics endeared him to the Nigerian public.

He died on November 11, 2020 at the age of 84.
