Romance Scam: Oyo State High Court Jails Man for Six Months

An Oyo State high court sitting in Ibadan has sentenced one Bolaji Salamic to six months imprisonment for involvement in online romance scam

Justice Sherifat Adeyemi pronounced Salamic guilty after listening to the testimonies of the prosecutors- the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency prosecuted Salamic on an amended one-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences contrary to Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The charge read, “That you, Bolaji Salami, sometime in March in Ibadan, with intent to defraud, obtained various gift cards, worth the sum of $150 from one Smith Johnson, a white male American citizen, when you falsely told him that you are a white female American by name Angelina James; that you are in love with him and wanted to marry him, claims you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence.”

He was jailed for six months with effect from 30th June 2020, being the date of his arrest.

Subsequently, the court ordered Salamic to return the stolen money to Smith Johnson (victim). The court also directed the government to take possession of his property which include an itel mobile phone, HP laptop computer and iPhone X Max.
